September 30, 2025 The Stranger in me is a heartwarming novel about a young boy, Roy Nilsson, growing up in the once rural community of Issaquah (Squak Valley) in Western Washington during the 1950s and 1960s. With vivid detail, this story shares Roy’s experiences as a boy growing up on a farm and learning how to work hard and appreciate nature. It also shows the challenges and growth that come with change: moving into town, new schools, the eb and flow of friendships, juggling jobs and hobbies, loss of loved ones, and figuring out the next steps in life.  Written with warmth and touch of intrigue, this story can connect with readers both young and old. The author illustrates beautiful imagery of the mountains and farmlands in the Pacific Northwest while sharing valuable lessons in a fun and nostalgic way.  “Each person in this life has endless, limitless, infinite potential. There will be spots that blind your vision when you can’t see what’s right in front of you. Just trust...

A Coming-of-Age Classic With a Mystical Twist Munson’s story of Roy Nilsson growing up in Squak Valley balances nostalgia with intrigue. The Stranger Albanian and the Spirits of the Future add a layer of mystery that turns a memoir into a captivating legend. Readers of all ages will recognize pieces of their own adolescence in Roy’s search for identity and belonging. Pacific Northwest Memories Brought to Life Munson’s lush descriptions of Squak Valley’s creeks, forests, and farmlands give the book a cinematic quality. But at its core, this is a story about guidance, growth, and the mentors who shape our lives. It’s a love letter to the Pacific Northwest and the bittersweet process of growing up.

Rook75  Sept 29,2025   5.0 out of 5 stars  The Stranger in Me, a vivid and engaging read Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2025 Format: Kindle The Stranger in Me was such a vivid and engaging read. As a resident of the Pacific Northwest who visits Issaquah every year, I especially appreciated how the book brought the valley’s history to life. The author weaves in so many fascinating details that made me feel like I was walking alongside Roy and experiencing the world through his eyes. Growing up alongside Roy is not only fun but also thought-provoking—there are adventures around every corner, challenges that test his character, and lessons that young readers can take with them. I think this story strikes a great balance: it’s entertaining enough to keep elementary readers hooked, while also offering depth and reflection that middle schoolers will appreciate. Overall, this is a wonderful mix of history, adventure, and heart. I highly recommend it to families, ...

A Book about connections of all kinds -- natural, human, and with self Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2025 Format: Paperback The Stranger in Me by Russ Munson follows the story of Roy Nilsson from when he moves to live on a farm with his mother at the age of seven to his high school graduation. Besides being a coming-of-age story for Roy, or a simple regional tale of life on a farm and, later, in the small town of Issaquah, the book also reveals Roy’s connection to both the land and its people. The narrator is deeply connected to the natural world, and as the world changes and develops, so does he.The reader can see this connection in the descriptions of his explorations: “My treks along the forest trails of Squak Mountain and the neighboring hills surrounding the farm became more than just walks – they were quiet pilgrimages into a world that pulsed with life just beneath the surface. The trees, animals, and birds were no longer background– they were characters i...

True or False?

In chapter 36: The Road To Satsop, Roy is a 17 year old high School senior when he meets Inga the beautiful Swedish exchange student at the Cascadia Cafe.  Inga is 19 and attending college at the University of Washington.  T or F ?     TRUE The author did meet and fall for the beautiful and smart tall Swedish blonde with a gorgeous smile.  I don’t know what she saw in me, or maybe it was the Honda 90 motorbike but we cruised around the town and hills of Issaquah all that spring. Then, like a summer storm it was all over as quickly as it had begun.  I was crushed of course but went to get a bigger Honda motorcycle.  RM

New Edition -Coming Soon

I’m excited to announce that I’m near completion on the newly revised Second Edition of The Stranger In Me. Some of the enhancements include a change in the subtitle to “ Growing Up In Squak Valley” - a nod to the coming of age nature of the story.  There are many improvements and new features in this version which has been written more for the Young Adult and Middle School age reader. My hope is that teachers, librarians and book clubs, interested in the Genres of historical fiction, coming of age, character development and mentorship will find the story, and the lessons therein, worthy as classroom discussion material. Look for the book on Amazon and Goodreads on or about October 15th. Russ Munson

Who is Dell?

The characterization of Dell, the farmhand is based on, in part, on a tough old buzzard named Dell who worked on the Mason farm back in the fifties and early sixties. Dell was the wisest uneducated man I ever met. Not in book smart ways but in the ways of life, nature, animals and people. Looking back I wish I would have captured every utterance and wry humor that he tossed my way from day to day.

Inspiration for The Stranger in Me

One inspiration bubbling inside of me for many years was the idea of creating a lasting legacy of the beauty and wonder of the peaceful Squak Valley in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. My idea was to preserve, in written word, the feeling of living in the natural paradise of Issaquah Washington in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
